How a DPS grows

A DPS (Deposit Pension Scheme, also sold as a monthly savings scheme) takes the same deposit every month and adds interest on the growing balance. This calculator assumes each deposit is made at the start of the month and interest is compounded monthly at one-twelfth of the yearly rate. The first deposit earns interest for the whole term and the last one for a single month.

Formula: maturity value = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly deposit, i is the yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n is the number of months.

Example: ৳5,000 a month for 5 years at 9% a year. i = 0.0075 and n = 60. The balance at the end is ৳3,79,949: you deposited ৳3,00,000 and earned ৳79,949 in interest before tax.

Why your bank's figure can differ

Banks print a maturity table for each DPS product, and that table is what they pay. It can differ from this result by a small amount because a bank may compound quarterly instead of monthly, round each month's interest, or deduct tax and excise duty along the way. Islamic banks pay profit under a mudaraba deposit at a provisional rate that is finalised later. Use the bank's own table for the final number and this calculator to compare offers on equal terms.

Tax and charges on a DPS

Interest on bank deposits is taxed at source: the bank deducts the tax before paying you, and the rate depends on your tax status. Banks also deduct excise duty once a year from accounts whose balance crosses the thresholds set in the national budget. Neither is assumed here. Enter your bank's tax rate in the box to see the after-tax figure.

A DPS counts as permitted investment for the income tax rebate up to the limit in the tax rules: see the income tax calculator. For a lump sum, compare the FDR calculator and the Sanchayapatra calculator.

Missing an instalment and closing early

Each bank sets its own rules for a missed instalment (usually a small late fee and a limit on how many can be missed) and for closing before maturity (usually a lower savings-account rate, or no interest in the first year). Read the product sheet before opening, because early closure is where most of the expected return is lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is DPS maturity value calculated?

Each monthly deposit earns compound interest until the end of the term. With deposits at the start of the month and monthly compounding, maturity value = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where i is the yearly rate divided by 1200 and n is the number of months.

How much will 5,000 taka a month become in 5 years?

At 9% a year compounded monthly, ৳5,000 a month for 60 months grows to about ৳3,79,949 before tax: ৳3,00,000 of deposits and ৳79,949 of interest. Enter your own bank's rate for an exact figure.

Why is the bank's DPS amount different from this calculator?

Banks may compound quarterly, round monthly interest, or deduct tax and excise duty during the term. Their printed maturity table is what they pay. This calculator shows the standard compound result so offers can be compared.

Is tax deducted from DPS interest?

Yes. Banks deduct income tax at source from deposit interest, at a rate that depends on your tax status. Enter the rate your bank applies to see the after-tax maturity value.

How much should I deposit each month to get 10 lakh taka?

Use the target box under the calculator. For example, at 9% a year for 10 years you need about ৳5,130 a month before tax on interest.

Does DPS reduce income tax?

A DPS is a permitted investment for the investment tax rebate, within the limit set in the tax rules. The rebate is the lowest of 3% of taxable income, 10% of permitted investment and ৳7,50,000.

Which is better, DPS or FDR?

They do different jobs. A DPS builds savings from monthly income. An FDR earns interest on money you already have. Compare the rates your bank offers for each with the two calculators.
