Nisab: how much wealth makes zakat due

Zakat is due when your zakatable wealth, after debts, has stayed at or above the nisab for one lunar year. The nisab is a fixed weight of metal: 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold. In Bangladesh a tola is the same as a bhori, 11.664 grams.

Nisab in Bangladeshi units
MeasureBhori / tolaGramsIn taka
Silver nisab (রুপার নিসাব)52.5612.3652.5 × silver price per bhori
Gold nisab (সোনার নিসাব)7.587.487.5 × gold price per bhori

The nisab in taka therefore moves with the market. If silver is ৳2,000 a bhori, the silver nisab is ৳1,05,000. If it is ৳3,000, the nisab is ৳1,57,500. That is why this page asks for today's price instead of printing a figure that would soon be wrong.

Which nisab applies to you

If the only zakatable thing you own is gold, the gold nisab applies by weight: zakat is due once you have 7.5 bhori or more. If you own gold together with cash, silver or business goods, the values are added together and measured against the silver nisab, which is far lower. This is the approach taught by scholars in Bangladesh following the Hanafi school, and most people with some gold and some savings fall under it. The calculator picks the basis this way and lets you change it if your scholar advises otherwise.

What to count and what to leave out

From the total, deduct debts and instalments that are due for payment now. What remains is your net zakatable wealth. If it is at or above the nisab on your zakat date, you pay 2.5% of all of it, not only of the part above the nisab.

How to calculate zakat on gold in bhori and ana

One bhori is 16 ana, and one ana is 6 roti. Convert your gold to bhori, multiply by the price per bhori for its karat, and that is its value. Example: 5 bhori 8 ana is 5.5 bhori. At ৳1,50,000 a bhori it is worth ৳8,25,000. If you also hold ৳75,000 in cash and have no debts, your net wealth is ৳9,00,000 and the zakat is 2.5% of that, ৳22,500.

Zakat is counted over a lunar (Hijri) year, which is about 11 days shorter than the English year, so your zakat date moves earlier each year. Many people fix a date in Ramadan. Check today's Hijri date on the Bangla and Hijri date page, and value gold with the gold price calculator.

Limits of this calculator

This is an arithmetic aid, not a religious ruling. Scholars differ on details such as jewellery in regular use, long-term loans, provident funds and shares held for dividends. Zakat on crops and livestock follows different rules and is not covered. For your own case, ask a qualified scholar or the Islamic Foundation. Fitra is separate from zakat; the Islamic Foundation announces the amount each Ramadan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the nisab for zakat in taka?

It is the price of 52.5 bhori (612.36 grams) of silver, or 7.5 bhori (87.48 grams) of gold. Multiply today's per-bhori price by 52.5 for the silver nisab. At ৳2,000 a bhori of silver it is ৳1,05,000.

How much zakat on 1 lakh taka?

If ৳1,00,000 is at or above the nisab on your zakat date and you have held nisab-level wealth for a lunar year, zakat is 2.5%, which is ৳2,500. Whether it reaches the nisab depends on the silver price that day.

How many bhori of gold makes zakat due?

7.5 bhori (87.48 grams) if gold is the only zakatable wealth you own. If you also have cash, silver or trade goods, add the values together and compare with the silver nisab, which is much lower.

How is zakat calculated?

Add the value of your gold, silver, cash, bank and wallet balances, savings, shares for sale, business stock and recoverable loans. Deduct debts due now. If the result is at or above the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of the whole amount.

Is zakat due on gold jewellery that I wear?

In the Hanafi school followed by most people in Bangladesh, yes: gold and silver are zakatable in any form, including jewellery in use. Other schools differ, so ask your scholar if you follow another view.

Is zakat due on DPS, FDR and sanchayapatra?

Yes, they are savings you own. Count the amount deposited plus any profit already credited to you on your zakat date.

Do I pay zakat on my house and car?

No. The home you live in, household goods, clothes, your own vehicle and the tools of your work are not zakatable. Property or vehicles bought to sell are counted as trade goods.

Does this calculator include fitra?

No. Fitra is a separate payment for each family member before Eid-ul-Fitr. The Islamic Foundation announces the amount each Ramadan.
