Brimful Rules, in Full
The board is a set of jars, each holding a fixed number of units and each a different size. Colours are stacked inside them. Tap a jar to lift it, tap another to pour: the top colour moves across, but only into a jar whose top unit is the same colour or which is empty, and only as far as that jar's remaining space allows. Nothing spills and nothing is lost. A level is cleared when every jar contains one colour and is filled to its own brim — not merely sorted, but full.
Colour Sort Strategy — Think About Capacity First
The mistake that stalls most players is treating Brimful like a normal water sort puzzle and sorting by colour alone. Because jars differ in size, a colour has to end up somewhere it exactly fits:
- Count before you pour. If a colour has six units on the board, it needs a jar of exactly six. Find that jar first and work backwards.
- Empty jars are moves, not storage. An empty jar accepts any colour, which makes it your only way to break a badly stacked pile. Refilling it too early throws that away.
- Small jars are the constraint. A two-unit jar can only ever end as a two-unit colour. Work out which colour that has to be early and the rest of the board narrows.
- Partial pours are fine. Pouring three units into a jar with room for two moves two and leaves one behind. Sometimes that split is exactly what you need; sometimes it wrecks a colour. Check the room before you tap.
Why Every Level Is Solvable
Levels are not shuffled at random. The generator starts from a finished board — every jar full of one colour — and runs legal pours backwards to scramble it. Because every step of the scramble was a legal move, reversing it is always possible, so no level can be a dead end. If a board looks impossible it is a sequencing problem, and undoing back to the last branch is a better move than restarting.
Brimful vs Water Sort and Ball Sort Puzzles
Water sort and ball sort games use identical tubes, which makes them pure ordering puzzles: any colour can live in any tube, so the only question is what order you move things in. Brimful keeps that and adds a fitting problem on top, because a colour with five units cannot finish in a four-unit jar no matter how well you sequence the pours. The result plays slower and rewards counting rather than trial and error. How to play
