The 2026 NFL regular season runs 18 weeks from September 10, 2026 into early January 2027, followed by the 14-team playoffs. Our playoff predictor is built around that exact format: four division winners plus three wildcards per conference, seeds 1–7, one bye per side. How the seven seeds are actually decided
Standings alone do not decide the bracket. When two or more teams finish with the same record, the NFL applies a fixed tiebreaker sequence, and the first step is which kind of tie it is: division ties are broken before wild-card ties, and a division tie must be settled first so that only one team from each division carries forward into the wild-card comparison. Within a division the order starts with head-to-head record, then record in games against common division opponents, then conference record. For wild-card spots head-to-head only counts if one team has played all the others involved, so conference record usually does the work instead. Two consequences for anyone picking seeds: a late-season head-to-head game is worth far more than its one-win face value, and a team can be eliminated by a rival it never played.
