Your prediction vs the real standings
Loading the live standings…
The NFL Playoff Predictor is a free, browser-based tool for calling the full 2026 NFL season before it starts: all eight division races, six wildcard spots, and the complete 1–7 seeding in both conferences. Every division starts in its 2025 finishing order, so you adjust from reality instead of a blank list. Your picks auto-save locally — nothing is uploaded — and once the season starts on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the panel under the tool pulls the real NFL standings and scores you week after week. Updated 2026-07-30.
How the NFL Playoff Predictor Works
The NFL splits its 32 teams into two conferences (AFC and NFC), each with four divisions of four teams. Use the AFC/NFC tabs to work through all eight divisions, dragging each team into your predicted order of finish — the team you leave at the top of a division card is your predicted division winner. As you set division winners, the seeding board below updates automatically: reorder your four winners into seeds 1–4, then tap three wildcard teams from the remaining pool to fill seeds 5–7.
That gives you a complete 14-team playoff field — the exact format the NFL has used since 2020: seven teams per conference, with only the No. 1 seed earning a first-round bye. When the real season is underway, the comparison panel scores two things separately: how accurately you ordered each division (exact spots, average error) and how well you called the playoff field ("you picked 11 of 14 playoff teams, 5 exact seeds").
Why predict before Week 1?
Preseason predictions are an American football ritual — every talking head, podcast and group chat locks in division winners and Super Bowl picks before opening night. The problem is nobody keeps score honestly. This tool does: your picks are timestamped by your own browser storage before kickoff, and the scoring panel updates from the live standings all season. Settle the argument in January with receipts.
The 2026 NFL Season: What You're Predicting
Each team plays 17 regular-season games across 18 weeks, from September 10, 2026 to early January 2027. Division winners are decided by win percentage — and with ties possible in the NFL, that half-win matters (the tool's data handles ties correctly, counting a tie as half a win). The three wildcards per conference are simply the three best non-winners by record, which is why a stacked division can send three teams to the playoffs while a weak one sends only its champion.
How the seeds work
Seeds 1–4 go to the four division winners, ordered by record; seeds 5–7 go to the wildcards. The No. 1 seed gets the only bye and home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. In the real NFL, ties in record are broken by a long ladder of tiebreakers (head-to-head, division record, conference record, and so on) — this tool keeps things simple and marks its computed seeds as approximate until the official seeds are set.
Tips for a Sharper Prediction
Recent history says don't just copy last season: on average roughly half of each year's playoff field turns over. Weigh quarterback changes above everything — a new starting QB moves a team's projection more than any other factor. Check strength of schedule (last-place teams get an easier slate under the NFL's scheduling formula), coaching changes, and key injuries from the summer. And remember the wildcard race is usually decided by one or two games, so a team's record in close games the previous year tends to regress toward the middle.
