How to write taka in words

Break the number from the right: the last three digits are hundreds, tens and ones, then two digits of thousands, two digits of lakh, and everything before that is crore. So 1,25,50,750 reads as 1 crore, 25 lakh, 50 thousand, 750. In Bangla: এক কোটি পঁচিশ লক্ষ পঞ্চাশ হাজার সাতশত পঞ্চাশ টাকা মাত্র. In English: One Crore Twenty-Five Lakh Fifty Thousand Seven Hundred Fifty Taka Only.

On a cheque or receipt the words end with মাত্র or “Only”, so nothing can be added after them. Paisa follows the taka: 5,250.50 is পাঁচ হাজার দুইশত পঞ্চাশ টাকা পঞ্চাশ পয়সা মাত্র.

Lakh and crore against million and billion

Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Nepal group digits as 2-2-3 from the right and count in lakh and crore. International documents group in threes and count in millions and billions. One million is ten lakh. One crore is ten million. One billion is one hundred crore. Bangla number words that people get wrong

Every Bangla number from 1 to 99 has its own word, so they cannot be built from parts the way English ones can. The numbers ending in nine are named from the next ten with ঊন, “one less than”: 29 is ঊনত্রিশ, 39 is ঊনচল্লিশ, 49 is ঊনপঞ্চাশ. The exceptions are 19, উনিশ, and 99, নিরানব্বই. Hundreds are written as one word with the number: দুইশত, পাঁচশত, নয়শত.

Writing the amount on a cheque

Write the words close to the left edge and leave no gap between words. Put “Only” or মাত্র straight after the last word. Write the figures close to the taka sign and end them with /- or =. The amount in words and the amount in figures must match; a bank can return a cheque when they differ. Do not overwrite a mistake: write a new cheque.
